Inhalt

Assessment is the process of understanding a given system to support decision making. In software engineering, assessing the current state of the system is a daily activity accounting for as much as 50% of the development costs.

Even if expensive, assessment is currently not addressed explicitly. As a consequence, developers approach in the least productive way by reading code. As part of the humane assessment (http://humane-assessment.com) philosophy, I introduce the daily assessment, a simple technique based on the following daily routine:

  1. identify concerns and make them explicit,
  2. create detection rules,
  3. discuss issues in a daily assessment stand-up, and
  4. fix today what can be fixed quickly.

The technology is indeed important for the second step, and I use the Moose analysis platform (http://moosetechnology.org) for it. But, the critical benefit comes from the making design decisions explicit and from the daily actions of cleaning the state of the system.

Zielgruppe

Referent

Tudor Girba (http://tudorgirba.com) attained his PhD in 2005 from the University of Berne, Switzerland, and he now works as a consultant. His main expertise lies in the area of software engineering with focus on software and data assessment.

Among others, since 2003 he leads the work on Moose, an extensive open-source platform for software and data analysis (http://moosetechnology.org). He published all sorts of peer reviewed publications, he served in program committees for several dozen international venues, and he is regularly invited to give talks and lectures.

He is advocating that assessment must be recognized as a critical software engineering activity. He coined the term "humane assessment" (http://humane-assessment.com), and he is currently helping companies to manage large software systems and data sets.
