CYD Campus Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Defence and Security
The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is fundamentally transforming all areas of defense and security. Key element of modern AI programs is their ability to take autonomous decisions. Worldwide huge investments flow into such programs, and AI is increasingly used as a strategic resource for powerpolitical positioning and influencing. Simultaneously, the autonomous nature of decision making marks the initial phase of an AI arms race. Whether in the defense against cyber attacks or in the creation of complex situational awareness or even implemented in autonomous weapon systems, AI applications solve many tasks with impressive performance that overtax human thinking. However, the high quality of AI solutions does not come for free.
The high complexity of new AI approaches, for instance Deep Learning systems, prevent the explainability of any decision making process. Missing explainability, in turn, becomes a major problem if the consequences of machine-generated decisions have inappropriate legal or ethical consequences. The high complexity further opens the doors for different types of misuse and manipulations of AI programs. Early debates on the multifarious aspects in AI between researchers, users and regulatory authorities offer the opportunity to shape the development and use of beneficial AI technologies. This conference aims to provide a platform for this purpose.
The Cyber-Defense Campus cordially invites all stakeholders to its inaugural Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Defence and Security taking place from 5 – 6 September 2019 in Lausanne. Speaker at the conference will be drawn internationally from all defence and security areas of industry, academia, military and government. The discussed AI topics will range from new scientific findings to the benefits and usability of AI techniques, including governmental and regulatory efforts which may become necessary in the future.
The Cyber-Defence (CYD) Campus was established in 2019 by the Swiss Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) as a technology anticipation platform that supports Switzerland in the defence against cyber threats. This event is part of a series of conferences organized by the CYD Campus to bring together academia, industry and the government and discuss eminent problems in cyber security and defence.
